Lately...

Happy Memorial Day. I have a lot to be thankful for, and I'm so grateful for all the men and women in the military, and for our veterans.
My grandpa lied about his age when he was only 16 and said he was 18 so he could join the Navy. I sure do miss him.

In February we got a new tv but it wouldn't fit in our cute entertainment center that our old tv was in. We had it temporarily on a small stand that made it look super top heavy, until I could find a stand for it. I searched ksl classifieds for months looking for just the perfect stand. In my head I had something in mind that I wanted. And a price limit as well, which is why we didn't buy new at RC Willey, or Gardner Village.

Then last week right before we went camping I found it. Finally a stand long enough and just what I was looking for! I convinced Mace to leave hanging out with his friends to help lift it (Mic was at work). So my dad, Mace, and I went to Daybreak to check it out and load it in my dad's Tahoe. I even negotiated the price down. I hadn't told Mic that I found a stand I liked, or that I bought it. I just picked it up, we carried it into the house and I waited for him to get off work so I could surprise him. LOL.
PS The drawers are organized for dvd's which is super nice, and I'll add decorations or whatever to the shelves/behind the cupboards.

After camping we were at my mom's returning her tent when Laura and Alex came over & surprised us with their engagement. Her ring is super cute. Thick band with rows and rows of diamonds. She wanted something simple, and that didn't have a setting that held the diamond up (not sure how to explain diamond settings.. but you know what I mean..) so that she could wear it at work, and not have it get snagged when she took gloves on/off. Such a smart idea, working in the hospital and all.

I'm secretly hoping they decide to do a destination wedding. I loved everything about our wedding, but I also think having a small intimate tropical destination wedding would be so fun. So cross your fingers that we go to Hawaii in 2013.. or wherever else is a popular destination wedding location. JK.

Today I went to my mom's and helped paint. She is selling her house soon, and so we're painting the entire basement along with a bunch of other home improvement projects to make it ready to sell. Mace and my dad had already painted Laura's old bedroom yesterday/early today. But I came and helped paint my old room. I miss that room. That room and closet is bigger than our master bedroom now, and much bigger than the room I had at my dad's house when I lived with him. Painting is a lot of work, but what a difference a couple coats of fresh paint makes.

We went camping last weekend to Granite Flats up American Fork Canyon. Since we both had to work all of Memorial weekend I decided to plan a camping trip the weekend before. And its a good thing we went when we did, because the weather got stormy and this weekend is cold & wet.

I’d never really been up American Fork Canyon. Except to Timpanogos Cave. But I wanted to go camping relatively close since we were only going for 2 nights. Granite Flats campground is beautiful and super close to a reservoir. (like a half mile each way).

We got there on Saturday and the camping spots are first come first serve. We drove around the whole site (there are like 65 spots) and picked out the perfect spot!

We set up our tent & hammock, hiked to the lake to check it out, and then made an easy/delicious tin foil dinner and roasted smores.

That night it got super cold. Soph sleeps in a kennel at home, so she was bundled up in her kennel and Mic and I were in our warm double sleeping bag. I woke up at 1am and checked on Sophie and she was shivering so bad in her kennel, but not crying at all. I felt so bad, and put her in the sleeping bag with us. She warmed up quickly, but at like 5am Mic reached across me to pet her and couldn’t feel her moving/breathing and woke me up saying “Lisa, Soph isn’t moving...!” I heard the panic in his voice and totally thought I’d somehow smothered/suffocated her at the bottom of my side of the sleeping bag! I quickly scooped her out from the bottom and started shaking her- she totally woke up and was fine, and confused about why I was shaking her. About gave me a heart attack! Needless to say we didn’t fall back asleep. No co-sleeping for us anymore.

Sunday we went fishing. We had to hike through part of the shallow part of the lake to a less crowded side of the lake. The water was freezing on my bare feet, and I kept sinking in the mud. But it was worth it to be away from all the people/random dogs. I didn’t catch anything, just kept getting sludge/”bottom of the lake” crap stuck on my hook. Mic caught a little fish, and it swallowed his hook way far. He had to perform major surgery to unhook it, and it kinda made me ill. But fortunately it survived and we were able to release it. Good thing, because I do not eat fish… but I would’ve forced myself to- had it died rather than just let it go to waste.

Sunday night/Monday there was no one at the campsite. Which was kinda scary, because I guess bears are way prevalent up this canyon, and no one would hear our screams if a bear tried to eat us. Soph even growled that night at something in the shadows. Freaked me out. Mic teased me and said she probably only saw a squirrel.

It was fun getting away just the two of us.  I think in all the time we’ve known each other we’ve only gone camping just us two for one night like 5 years ago, all the other times were with friends or family.

Can’t wait to go camping again, when we go to Lake Powell.

soph wouldn't cross the swift stream, so I had to carry her across the log.

soph had to bring her tennis ball on the trip

staying busy.. blah.

I don’t know how life got so crazy busy but I haven’t had time to blog for awhile. And really with school coming to an end for the semester/studying for finals- Mic & I haven’t been up to anything too exciting lately/blog worthy. LOL.

Some highlights off the top of my head that have happened lately:

We did house sit my friend’s house in beautiful Suncrest for a week. We LOVED it. It was like our own staycation/home away from home. Soph loved playing with their big dogs, and 3 cats. I’ll have to blog about that later & the funny stories & upload the pictures.

Sad story: we had to put down my family dog of 12 years at the beginning of April. That was rough. Duncan was the first and only dog our family has owned. Best rescue dog ever. I will miss snoodle doodle dunc so much. When I was first grieving I came across this really good quote “I guess you don’t really own a dog, you rent them, and you have to be thankful you had a long lease.” I plan on writing a post about Duncan and including some pictures later.

We celebrated Sophie’s first birthday. I always thought it was weird when people had birthday parties for their pets and I never really knew the actual birthday for my pets anyway… but when Mic got Soph she came with a birth certificate saying her birthday was on May 5th (cinco de mayo!). And from the beginning I joked that I’d throw her a party. And I did. It was super chill, and really just an excuse to have a get together, and not so much an actual birthday party. I did make her a puppy cake. I’d say I googled the recipe… but knowing my recipe following skills you have to know that I didn’t actually follow the recipe. In fact I found two different recipes (one for “pup cakes” and one for a doggy birthday cake) and I combined the two recipes based off of the ingredients I had on hand, and more or less made the whole thing up. Of course. Man when will I ever get it together.. in the kitchen. The cake smelled pretty gross (which why wouldn’t it, since it was a weird mixture of carrots, peanut butter, apple sauce, etc.) but Soph LOVED it. My family all came over and we had a Mexican theme dinner for cinco de mayo. The original plan was to have it in the backyard because there is more space, but it was too cold that day so we all crammed in my kitchen/living room. We all managed to squeeze in around my kitchen table which was pretty impressive because it’s not very big.

I love Soph more than I’d ever imagined, and I’m so glad Mic decided to surprise me with her. He picked out a good one! I love looking through all the pictures we’ve taken of her, which is seriously A TON! She’s so photogenic too. Of course I’d have a little poser dog, who is used to getting her picture taken. I always joke with Mic that our kids will be funny photo posers since I’m obsessed with taking pictures.

We have some fun things to look forward to this summer so I’ll hopefully have something to blog about. If people even read this? I enjoy it anyway.

Random pictures (below) of Sophie for her first year that we've had her. I guess technically its not quite a year since we got her at 8 weeks, but you know what I mean..
